The government is about to hand Meta and ByteDance the ultimate regulatory moat, and they’re doing it under the guise of "protecting the children."

The current consultation on banning social media for under-16s is a masterclass in reactionary policy. It treats a complex structural shift in human communication like a tobacco product. But pixels aren't nicotine, and the "digital safety" lobby is ignoring a glaring reality: prohibition creates black markets, and in the digital world, a black market is a space where no one—not parents, not regulators, and certainly not the platforms—has any oversight.

By pushing for a blanket ban, we aren't saving kids. We are ensuring the next generation grows up technologically illiterate while handing tech giants a "get out of jail free" card for the harms their algorithms cause.

The Age Verification Farce

Every regulator loves to talk about age verification as if it’s a simple "show your ID" interaction at a liquor store. It isn't. To implement a functional, unhackable ban for under-16s, you require one of two things: a massive, centralized government database of biometric data, or a total surrender of privacy to third-party verification firms.

When you demand that every user prove they are over 16, you aren't just checking kids. You are forcing every adult to link their physical identity to their digital footprint. This is a surveillance wet dream masquerading as a child safety initiative.

I’ve seen how these systems fail. In my years auditing digital infrastructure, the "wall" is always paper-thin. A VPN costs five dollars. A spoofed MAC address takes three minutes to set up. We are entering an era of AI-integrated social layers. Understanding the difference between a synthetic influencer and a real human is a critical 21st-century skill. You don't learn to swim by staying away from the water until you're an adult; you learn by getting in the shallow end with supervision.

A ban is the ultimate "opt-out" for parents. It tells them: "The government has this covered, you don't need to talk to your kids about digital literacy." That is a catastrophic failure of leadership.

The Business of Compliance

Look at the stock prices of the companies involved in the "Age Tech" sector. They are the only ones winning here.

For the big platforms, a ban is actually a relief. Dealing with the UK’s Online Safety Act and similar global regulations is a massive legal headache. If they can just "ban" under-16s, they can slash their trust and safety budgets. They no longer have to design specialized interfaces or moderate "kid-safe" content. They can point to their Terms of Service and say, "They shouldn't be here anyway," whenever a tragedy occurs.

It’s a liability shield disguised as a moral crusade.

How to Actually Fix the Problem

Stop trying to block the signal and start fixing the receiver.

  2. Device-Level Controls, Not Platform-Level Bans: The power should be in the hardware. Apple and Google already have the keys to the castle. If we want limits, they happen at the OS level, managed by the person who actually knows the child: the parent.
  3. Algorithmic Transparency: Force platforms to publish the "weights" of their recommendation engines. If "outrage" is weighted higher than "educational content" for users under 18, levy fines that actually hurt—10% of global turnover, not a rounding error.
  4. Digital Literacy as a Core Subject: We teach kids how to solve for $x$ in a quadratic equation, yet we don't teach them how a Transformer model generates a deepfake. That is educational malpractice.

The Uncomfortable Truth

The push for a ban is a confession of weakness. It is a sign that we have given up on the idea of a healthy digital society and have decided to settle for a gated one.

We are telling kids that the world we built for them is so toxic, so predatory, and so addictive that they aren't allowed to see it until they are nearly old enough to drive a car or join the military.

If the digital world is that broken, the solution isn't to hide it. The solution is to rebuild the architecture that made it that way in the first place.

Stop protecting the platforms by giving them an excuse to ignore our children. If a product is too dangerous for a 15-year-old, it’s probably not doing much good for a 35-year-old, either.
